Extension to a contemporary home. Étoile du Nord is a carefully considered single-storey extension that enhances a contemporary coastal home through restraint, precision, and a sensitive response to site and materiality.
Designed as a lightweight intervention, the extension remains deliberately subordinate to the existing dwelling, sitting discreetly within a subtle change in level to preserve the prominence of the original house while providing additional accommodation.
A glazed link creates a clear yet understated connection between old and new, allowing the extension to read as a contemporary addition with minimal impact on the existing structure.
Materiality plays a central role in grounding the design within its landscape setting. Stone creates continuity with the host building, while open-jointed vertical Accoya cladding introduces warmth, texture, and a softer, more recessive character that allows the extension to sit quietly within the surrounding vegetation.
Responding directly to the site’s topography, the cantilevered structure minimises excavation, preserves established planting, and creates light-filled, adaptable spaces with strong visual connections to the west coast landscape.
Étoile du Nord demonstrates how carefully considered detailing and restrained material choices can create a contemporary extension that feels both purposeful and quietly integrated within its environment.
